Don't Get Trapped By Carpet Scams!

If you are in the market for new carpet, then carpet scams are things that you need to know about. If you do not know how to identify and avoid them, then you might find yourself in a spot of financial trouble in the future.

There are many carpet companies out there. Some are honest, and sadly some are not. So when you hire a company for your carpet installation needs, it is very important that you do your homework. See if they have a history of good customer service, or are they known to scam. You need to know exactly who they are before you hire them.

Identifying Carpet Scams

There are quite a few different carpet scams used today. Some of them are hard to notice they are being used until it is too late. To help you avoid these carpet scams, we will teach you how to identify them. The most common scams used today are:

  • Fiber Ripoff - This is basically when the company tells you that the carpeting you want is made out of a fiber that it really is not. For example, they could tell you that the carpeting you are interested in is a Stainmaster nylon when it really is a cheap olefin carpet.
  • The Switcheroo - Let’s pretend that you have just purchased a thick and comfortable plush with the best carpet deal you have ever heard of. Upon the installation however, you get a thinner and less comfortable version. The company just scammed you into paying the price of the thicker one, but gave you a lower quality carpet.
  • Pay For The Labor Directly - This carpet scam is seen more with unlicensed installers and dealers. The installer will have you pay him for the service at the end of the installation day. If you happen to notice an issue he did not fix after he leaves, you most likely will not be getting him to come back and fix it. Make sure to pay for the whole package, not just the installation alone.
  • The Bait And Switch - This carpet scam is the most common one seen today. In short, this is when a company will advertise a type of carpeting with the best carpet prices available. Once you go into their store to check out the deal, they show you low quality carpeting and switch your attention to a more expensive high quality material. They baited you into their store and switched you to something else. Many big box carpet companies tend to do this.
  • Guaranteed Low Pricing - Another carpet scam seen more with big box companies. They will tell you that a better price cannot be found anywhere else. If you happen to find a better price, they will match it or beat it. What you do not know is that every company privately labels their material, so it is impossible to find the same one.

The best way to avoid carpet scams is to prevent them from even coming up in conversation. If you start to notice that the company you are considering is trying to pull a fast one, shut it down. Try not to forget that there are companies out there that actually have deals and carpet specials to benefit their customers. There are trustworthy ones out there.
